Babymoon in Puerto Vallarta: A Photographer's Guide to Capturing This Once-in-a-Lifetime Trip

Babymoon in Puerto Vallarta: A Photographer's Guide to Capturing This Once-in-a-Lifetime Trip

There’s a particular kind of magic that happens when two people arrive in Puerto Vallarta knowing that everything is about to change. The baby isn’t here yet. The chaos hasn’t started. There’s just the two of you, the Pacific, and a belly full of everything you’ve been dreaming about.

That’s a babymoon. And there’s no better place in Mexico to have one.

After photographing expecting couples on these beaches, I’ve learned that a babymoon session is different from any other maternity shoot. It’s not just about the bump. It’s about the two of you — the last trip you’ll take as a couple before you become a family of three. That shift deserves to be documented.

Why Puerto Vallarta for Your Babymoon?

Puerto Vallarta sits at a rare intersection: dramatic natural beauty, world-class restaurants and hotels, warm water, and a pace of life that actually lets you slow down. For an expecting couple, that combination is hard to beat.

The city is also far more manageable than Los Cabos or Cancún — shorter walks, cooler breezes off the Sierra Madre, and a historic center that rewards slow exploration without demanding too much physically. Most of our favorite session locations are within 15 minutes of the main hotel zone.

And the light. Puerto Vallarta’s golden hour — that 45-minute window before the Pacific sun dips below the horizon — produces the kind of warm, cinematic glow that makes maternity portraits look like they belong in a magazine.

When to Plan Your Babymoon Session

The sweet spot for babymoon photography is between weeks 28 and 34 of pregnancy. Your belly is beautifully round, you’re still comfortable enough to move and enjoy the beach, and there’s enough time before your due date to travel without added risk for most pregnancies.

For Puerto Vallarta specifically, I’d also suggest thinking about the season:

November through April is dry season — clear skies, lower humidity, and the most reliable golden hour light. This is peak season for a reason.

May through October brings occasional rain and higher humidity, but also emptier beaches, lower hotel rates, and dramatic cloud formations at sunset that can make for truly extraordinary photos. If you’re flexible, the “shoulder” months of May and November offer the best of both worlds.

Whatever time of year you visit, book your photography session before you arrive. The best sunset times fill quickly, especially during peak season, and coordinating your session location in advance means we can choose the perfect spot for your specific vision.

The Best Locations for Babymoon Photos in Puerto Vallarta

Conchas Chinas is my personal favorite for babymoon sessions. The rocky shoreline creates natural frames, the beach is quieter than the main strip, and the way the late sun catches the water here is unlike anywhere else in the bay. It photographs beautifully at every stage of pregnancy.

Playa Los Muertos and the Zona Romántica offer a different energy — more vibrant, more colorful, with the iconic pier and the cobblestone streets just steps away. For couples who want a mix of beach and city, this area gives you both in a short walk.

The Malecón at golden hour works beautifully for a more editorial feel — the sculpture garden, the ocean backdrop, the warm glow of the promenade lights as the sun sets. It’s Puerto Vallarta at its most cinematic.

Private villa or hotel terrace sessions are worth considering if you’re staying somewhere with a view. Some of the most intimate babymoon portraits I’ve made have been with the couple on their own balcony, overlooking Banderas Bay, in the last light of the day.

What to Expect from a Babymoon Photography Session

A babymoon session with Antonio Vargas Photos begins with a brief consultation — usually over WhatsApp — where we talk through your vision, your preferred locations, and what time of day works best for the light and your energy levels.

On the day of the session, plan for 60 to 90 minutes depending on your package. That’s enough time to move between one or two locations without feeling rushed, capture both intimate couple portraits and solo maternity images, and let the session breathe naturally rather than feeling like a checklist.

I work with available light and flash when needed to balance the strong backlight of a Pacific sunset — so your faces are always lit beautifully, even when the sun is behind you.

Your photos will be ready within 72 business hours, delivered as high-resolution JPGs through a private online gallery with unlimited downloads. No watermarks, ever.

A Note on Wardrobe

For babymoon sessions, I always recommend bringing two outfit options — one flowing dress in a light, solid color for the beach portraits, and something slightly dressier if you’d like a few images with a different mood.

Avoid anything with busy patterns, logos, or bright neon colors. Whites, creams, blush, sage, and soft terracotta all photograph beautifully against Puerto Vallarta’s natural palette. Your partner should coordinate without matching exactly — think complementary tones rather than identical outfits. If you’re considering professional hair and makeup for your session — which I always recommend — reach out to Daniela Quilapan (Instagram · Facebook), the most talented makeup artist in Puerto Vallarta and the person I trust with every expecting mother I photograph. She understands exactly how makeup behaves under a camera and in the Vallarta heat, and her work is consistently stunning.
