If you’re planning a trip to Puerto Vallarta between June and October and wondering whether it’s worth booking a photography session — this post is for you.

The short answer is yes. But let me give you the honest, practical version, because the weather here is more nuanced than most travel blogs will tell you.

What the Weather Actually Looks Like in Puerto Vallarta’s Rainy Season

Puerto Vallarta’s summer doesn’t work like a typical rainy season. It’s not a predictable afternoon shower that rolls in at 3pm and clears by 4pm. The reality is more varied — and once you understand it, it stops being something to worry about and starts being something to work with.

There are essentially two types of rain here:

The torrential afternoon storm. This is what most people picture when they think of tropical rain. Heavy, dramatic, and loud — but usually short. The morning can be completely clear with strong sun, and by mid-afternoon the sky opens up. These storms are intense but they move through. By evening, the air is clean, the light is extraordinary, and the beach is nearly empty.

The light, lingering rain. Less common, but it happens — a soft, persistent drizzle that can last hours or even a couple of days. No thunder, no drama, just grey skies and a gentle mist. For photography, this kind of weather is actually ideal in many ways.

And then there’s a third option that nobody talks about: completely overcast days with no rain at all. The sky is covered, the temperature drops a few degrees, and the light becomes something a photographer dreams about.

Why Overcast and Cloudy Days Are Actually Better for Portraits

This surprises almost every client who asks me about it, so let me explain.

When the sun is strong — which in Puerto Vallarta means most of December through May — it creates harsh shadows, forces people to squint, and produces uneven light that’s technically challenging to work with. Photographers spend a lot of time finding shade, adjusting angles, and using flash to balance what the sun is doing to people’s faces.

On an overcast day, the clouds act as a giant natural softbox. The light wraps evenly around your face. There are no harsh shadows. Colors are rich and saturated. Skin tones are flattering. You can face any direction without squinting.

Some of the most beautiful portraits I’ve made in Puerto Vallarta have been on days when the sky was completely white. The drama comes from the people, not from fighting the light.

What Happens If It Rains During Our Session?

This is the question I get most often from clients booking in summer, and the answer depends on what kind of rain we’re dealing with.

If it’s a light drizzle: We shoot through it. A little rain on the beach or in the Zona Romántica can actually add atmosphere to images — wet cobblestones, soft mist over the ocean, the colors of the buildings more saturated than usual. Some of my favorite sessions have happened in light rain.

If it’s a heavy afternoon storm: We adjust the timing. Puerto Vallarta’s mornings in summer are frequently clear and sunny. Booking your session for early morning or late morning — rather than late afternoon — gives us the best chance of clean weather. I monitor the forecast closely and I’ll communicate with you 24 to 48 hours before to make a plan.

If the weather is genuinely unworkable: We reschedule. I build flexibility into my calendar specifically for summer sessions, and rescheduling due to weather never costs you anything extra.

The Real Advantage of Booking in Summer

Here’s what nobody tells you when you’re researching a Puerto Vallarta photoshoot: summer is actually one of my favorite times to work here.

The beaches are quieter. The Zona Romántica is less crowded. The light after a rain — especially in the late afternoon when a storm clears just before sunset — is unlike anything you get in dry season. That warm, golden, washed-clean quality to the air produces images that look almost cinematic.

And practically speaking: hotel rates are lower, restaurants are easier to get into, and the whole city feels more relaxed. Your vacation photos will show a version of Puerto Vallarta that most tourists never see.

The Best Time of Day for Summer Sessions in Puerto Vallarta

Based on years of shooting here through rainy seasons, here’s what I recommend:

Early morning (7–9am) is the most reliable window. Skies are frequently clear, the light is soft and directional, and the beaches are empty. For families with young children, this timing also works well because nobody is tired yet.

Golden hour (5:30–7pm) is still magical in summer — but it carries more weather risk. When it works, it’s extraordinary. When a storm rolls in, we lose the light entirely. I always have a backup plan for late-afternoon summer sessions.

Midday is worth considering on overcast days. Normally I’d never recommend midday for portraits — the sun is too harsh. But when the sky is covered, midday light in summer is soft, even, and surprisingly beautiful.

Practical Tips for a Summer Session in Puerto Vallarta

Book with flexibility in mind. Give yourself at least two available days for your session rather than locking in a single date. This makes rescheduling simple if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

Dress for the heat, not the photos. Summer humidity in Puerto Vallarta is real. Lightweight fabrics, breathable materials, and light colors will keep you comfortable and photograph beautifully. Avoid heavy layers or fabrics that wrinkle easily — you’ll feel it within minutes of stepping outside.

Don’t count on the forecast more than 48 hours out. Puerto Vallarta’s summer weather is genuinely unpredictable. A forecast that looks stormy on Monday can completely clear by Wednesday. I keep a close eye on the radar as your session date approaches and I’ll update you with a realistic picture of what to expect.

Embrace it. The clients who come into a summer session with openness — willing to get a little warm, willing to laugh if a few drops fall — always end up with the best photos.
